Show students how far they've come

Discuss your students' progress

Students who feel like they're making progress stay. Students who feel stuck leave, even when they're actually improving.

Language learning is slow and incremental. Students rarely notice their own growth unless someone points it out. Tutors who do that consistently are the ones who keep students coming back.

Use this activity on a monthly basis to reflect on your student's progress. Ask them to fill in the boxes and then discuss their answers together.

Start with the win

Name one thing that has genuinely improved and make it concrete: "You used the subjunctive naturally in conversation today. You couldn't do that in January." Students are far more receptive to feedback and challenge when they feel celebrated first.

Make it evidence-based

Specific observations stick. Use the template to capture things like a sentence the student got right, or a moment they handled in the language that they couldn't before.

End with a shared goal

Close every progress review with: "So what should we focus on next?" Let the student answer first. That one question shifts ownership. A student who sets their own goal has a reason to come back and see it through.

How to add these to Preply Canvas:

Using the templates inside Preply Canvas means you and your student can fill them in together during the lesson, which is where the real value happens.

Step 1: Save the template from the Academy
Step 2: Open Preply Canvas during your lesson
Step 3: Click on "Add new page" and select "Upload file
Step 4: Select the file from your computer or drag-and-drop it in Canvas
Step 5: Fill it in together 🧑‍🎓
